Rough Draft Final Project: Collage Animation

1) This is just a small section, but overall I am trying to apply what I know about stop motion and sound with what I wanted to convey with my second project entitled 'Spontaneous Music!' in order to create a cohesive, emotional alternate world in which the story can take place. I'm using the approach of collage, similar to I think it was Shelley Silver, moving pieces of paper bit by bit to create the effect of motion.
2)I guess I'm wondering if there's anything in general you have to say: about the set-up, the characters, the possibility for sounds or what you'd like to hear. I think everything will become a lot clearer once I ahve the sound honestly.
3)I am going to present the whole story in stop-motion collage animation, complete with a progression towards color, towards daylight, and with a soundtrack I create myself! It'll be super awesome, it's just gonna take a lot of batteries and patience to get there.

  1. I really like it so far! Your technical setup seemed good; only minor shakes and light changes could be seen. It's a little hard to tell what the creatures are, but I love that the camera zoomed in on the one figure for a few seconds. I'm sure with sound + more animation the plot will become more clear, as well as the characters.
As of now I'm a little confused as to what the characters are. Is it grass they're in? Are they chasing each other? Is one trying to eat the other??

Like I said, I'm sure you have good plans for how you're working this out. Excited to see!

  2. I really like the idea of using paper to do a stop-motion. Technically, everything is well done. I think that since the pieces (so far) are in black and white, it may be advantageous for you to add a pop of color. I'm a bit confused as to what the characters are or what the plot is supposed to be, but I'm sure much of the piece will be tied together with sound. Good start!

  3. I think it's a great idea to use the idea of collage to tell a story and I do agree that once you add sound it will become more clear. I am not exactly sure what is going on in your piece as of now (I understand that it is a chase–– is there anything more to it?), but I think there are some interesting visuals going on with the overlapping of pieces of paper. I almost want to see some more colors and textures in your piece, though. It's very grey and slightly flat at the moment. I think you have a lot of possibility to bring in interesting materials to create an amazing scene in which this chase takes place. In terms of technicalities, in some of the frames your focused seemed a bit blurry and the frames seemed wobbly as if you were not using a tripod. I agree with you about your characters–– I'm confused about what exactly they are. This might be because they are just little cut out shapes now. How can you give them each a personality?
